Perimenopause & Menopause Counselling
The physical side of perimenopause gets discussed, eventually. The emotional side rarely does — the rage that arrives from nowhere, the anxiety that was never there before, the sense of becoming unrecognisable to yourself.
I offer counselling through perimenopause and menopause in North Vancouver, and online anywhere in BC.
How counselling helps through menopause
Much of the relief comes simply from naming it accurately. A great many women arrive convinced something is seriously wrong with them, when what is happening is hormonal, common, and temporary in its acute phase.
From there we work on the mood changes and anxiety, the effect on relationships and work, and the identity questions that often surface at the same time as ageing parents, leaving children and career reassessment.
My approach
I draw on mindfulness-based approaches for the anxiety and sleep disruption, narrative therapy for the identity work, and attachment-based understanding where it is affecting a relationship.
Who this is for
- Mood changes, irritability and rage
- Anxiety arriving for the first time in midlife
- Sleep disruption and its knock-on effects
- Loss of confidence at work
- Strain on a relationship
- Identity and purpose in midlife
- Grief for an earlier version of yourself
What to expect
Sessions are 50 minutes at $160, in person at my North Vancouver office on West 17th Street or by secure video anywhere in British Columbia. Many extended health plans reimburse counselling with a Registered Clinical Counsellor, and detailed receipts are provided for every session. Counselling works alongside medical care rather than replacing it, and I will always encourage you to speak to your doctor about the physical side.
Common questions
Is this instead of seeing my doctor?
No. Please do both. Medical care addresses the physical and hormonal side; counselling addresses the emotional and relational side. They work well together.
I am not sure if it is perimenopause or something else.
That uncertainty is extremely common and worth exploring. Counselling can help you make sense of what you are noticing, and a medical assessment alongside will give you a fuller picture.
Can we meet online instead?
Yes. Secure video sessions are available anywhere in British Columbia and work just as well as meeting in person for most concerns. Some clients mix the two depending on the week.
